asiabsdcon 2009 Paper Session. Abstract: FreeBSD has a reputation for its rock-solid reliability and top performance in the server world, but there is noticeable when it comes to the huge market of desktop computing. Why is this so? FreeBSD provides many, if not almost all of the same open source packages, and software used in the most popular desktop Linux distributions are available, but also offers the speed and reliability, FreeBSD, providing a relatively small number of users theytheir desktops. In this talk, we'll look at some of the reasons why FreeBSD is not that far into the desktop market has, as it is on the server side. Some of the desktop display weaknesses of FreeBSD, along with how we try to register these deficits through a desktop centric version of FreeBSD Update, known as PCBSD. We will also look at the package management system equally by all open-source operating system used, and brings some of the dangersthe widespread adoption of desktop can be prevented. Author: Kris Moore is the founder of PC-BSD project serves and is currently a senior developer. He is a strong supporter of the support for desktop systems, BSD. Kris has been working on UNIX-based systems for more than a decade in the areas of networking, data recovery and application development. He and his family currently live in East Tennessee.
